
A chance to learn how to communicate without using your voice and be able to experience the fascinating language of the Deaf Community.
This course would suit you if you want a basic understanding of BSL and are unsure if you want to commit to a longer course or want a course that does not follow a curriculum and is tailor made to meet your individual or groups needs.
Options of course times (flexible):
Suggestions: One morning or afternoon 6 sessions for 3 hours.
Venue: Sign Studio has its own venue based in Lancashire where they run courses throughout the year that you can attend.
It can also deliver its courses at venues throughout the country. Within your own premises or by booking a suitable venue for you.
What is this course all about?(flexible)
This will vary depending on length of course.
You will start with an understanding of what BSL is and will learn to communicate in BSL at a basic level.
You will also learn some basic grammar and syntax. Learning sign vocabulary linked to basic introductions and specific requested vocabulary.
No previous experience is necessary, but It is important that participants are willing to take personal responsibility for their learning by the disposing of inhibitions towards using their hands, facial expression and body language to communicate - not their voices.
Tutors will give feedback during activities and you will be able ask as questions if you have any queries.

All equipment and resources will be provided be Sign Studio. Although having access to a video recorder, DVD and internet is a benefit, but not a necessity. Textbooks and resources will be recommended, but do not have to be purchased.
Light Homework may be set on the longer courses. Participants will be asked to revise what they have learnt as well as prepare for the following sessions
What do I expect to learn? (flexible)

Sign vocabulary linked to certain topics e.g. specific requested vocabulary, Introductions, repetition & clarification, family, colours, size, sport, interests prepositions and pronouns, numbers, money, time, useful conversational vocabulary.
How to converse in sign at a basic level.
You will also be learning about BSL grammatical features e.g. non-manual features, BSL syntax, question forms, affirmation, and negation.
What can I expect to gain?
A certificate of attendance.
Once learnt you will remember these basic skills for the rest of your life. You never know when you may bump into a Deaf person and use them.
