Deaf Community and Culture

This course is designed to cover issues in relation to the Deaf community and learn about its culture. It is the opportunity to gain a deeper insight and find out how the culture, codes of behaviour and values differ from the wider hearing community.
This course would suit you if you are attending a British Sign Language Level 1 course or have completed it and would like a deeper understanding of the Deaf community and it’s Culture.
Options of course times: 2 full days (9 30am – 4 30pm) / 5 sessions for 2.5 hours / 3 sessions for 4 hours.
Venue Sign Studio has its own venue based in Lancashire where they run courses throughout the year that you can attend. It can also deliver its courses at venues throughout the country. Within your own premises or by booking a suitable venue for you.
What is the course all about? The curriculum for the Deaf Community and Culture has been developed to provide a nationally accredited award, that provides students with a broad understanding of the everyday life of the 50,000 – 70,000 Deaf people of the Deaf community in Britain. It covers issues such as language, social life, communication issues, access to information and equipment. You will be learning through activities set by your tutor. Activities will be done individually in pairs and in groups. They will include quizzes, discussion and role-play and games.
How will I know when I’m making progress? Participants will be able to assess their own progress throughout the course. Tutors will give feedback during activities and you will be able ask as questions if you have any queries. You will also be involved in a simulation mock exam, prior to CACDP’s exam.
All equipment and resources will be provided be Sign Studio.
Exam Information: The exam is half an hour and is a written paper where you have 20 Multiple choice questions and 8 questions that require a sentence for the answer or bullet points
Will there be any homework? You will be given handouts to read and be asked to do some research into the Deaf Community. You will be asked to watch the Deaf Community & Culture Homework video.
What do I expect to learn? Course Outline:

What can I expect to gain? A Nationally recognised Deaf Community & Culture Certificate if you pass the exam. Knowledge that will enable you understands the Deaf Community their language and Culture.
Course costs: Differ depending on group sizes, location and venue. Assessment fees will be included. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and you will find we have very reasonable rates.
